How can Eclipse SDK 3.5.1, also known as Galileo,<br \/>\ncan be still hanging on a background thread in this flipping year of 2010?<br \/>\nThis is the second time in 24 hours that I had to use the venerable<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.systeminternals.com\/\">Process Explorer from SystemInternals<\/a><br \/>\nto forcibly kill the Eclipse SDK process.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWhat is even more galling is that the Windows Shortcut on my workstation<br \/>\nhas the following memory utilisations:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nC:\\opt\\eclipse\\eclipse-Java-Galileo-SR1-MyEclipse 8\\eclipse.exe&#8221; -vmargs -Xms256M -Xmx1024M\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nSo yes I am already reserving enough memory for the IDE.<br \/>\nIt is absurd that the editor, inside a large multi-module project, struggles with autocompletion of methods, library classes and packages.<br \/>\nSome one with half brain has implemented a poorly written long running thread<br \/>\nthat we all are paying the price for, still, in 2010. Has no one in Eclipse SDK devolopment land<br \/>\never read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.briangoetz.com\/\">Brian Goetz&#8217;s<\/a> eloquent tome<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Java-Concurrency-Practice-Brian-Goetz\/dp\/0321349601\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1272619714&#038;sr=1-1\"><br \/>\nJava Concurrency in Practice<br \/>\n<\/a>. Read chapter 7 <em>Cancellation and Shutdown<\/em>. Please read it again. Read it once more.<br \/>\nPlease re-read it during your reimplemention of the flaming <em>Java Indexer<\/em> or<br \/>\nwhatever miscreat processor handles autocompletion in Eclipse SDK land with <code>java.lang.Thread#interrupt()<\/code> and <code>java.util.concurrent.ExecutorService<\/code>.<br \/>\nHope we can fix this issue for good.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAlso, did you know that NetBeans, since 6.7, has had an amazing feature for quite some time. It is a simple dialog<br \/>\nand informs the user.<br \/>\n<cite>&#8220;Slowness detected, please file a bug report&#8221;<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>In other words, the IDE itself can detect when it is running abysmally slow. Damn it!\n<\/p>\n<p>\nI cannot get those hours back, not ever.<br \/>\n<strong>W<\/strong>here<br \/>\n<strong>D<\/strong>oes<br \/>\n<strong>D<\/strong>eveloper<br \/>\n<strong>T<\/strong>ime<br \/>\n<strong>G<\/strong>o?
